The story follows Joni Ferguson, a recently divorced mother who relocates with her 15-year-old son, Zac, to the Blue Mountains to run a bed and breakfast. Six months into their new life, the local doctor is found dead under mysterious circumstances. While the police investigate, Zac uses his forensic-minded intuition to conduct his own "Poirot-like" investigation to clear his mother's name after she becomes a person of interest.
